Trauma is inherently disorganizing and leads to feelings of isolation, powerlessness, and a loss of connection

Hello and welcome!

My name is Karen Ouse (she/her).

I am a licensed psychotherapist in Aptos, California, and I have been practicing psychotherapy for 20 years. I am a single mother of a kind, creative, and gender diverse child, a tribal member of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, a former dancer and performer, and a huge animal lover. Weekends are often spent with my kiddo and Blitz, our Siberian Husky, at the beach or in the forest. An advocate of continual growth, I playfully like to say that I am a recovering perfectionist.

Often, the places we get stuck come from early wounding, and the strategies we developed about who we thought we were in an attempt to survive and protect our attachment relationships. I provide a warm, non-pathologizing, culturally sensitive lens, and am open to working with people of all races, gender/non-binary, sexual orientation, stages of life, and alternative lifestyles. I offer holistic psychotherapy with an emphasis on working through symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and Complex PTSD. The two primary modalities I integrate into my practice are Somatic Experiencing®, a gentle way of restoring nervous system dysregulation, and the Neuro-Affective Relational Model (NARM®), which helps to understand trauma in terms of our attachment relationships and how they have influenced our sense of sense of self and identity. Holism is a concept that allows us to see and be viewed as more than the individual parts of ourselves, and more than the symptoms that bring us to therapy. Holistic psychotherapy cares for the mind/body/spirit connection, and acknowledges people in the fullness of who they are as individuals as well as their cultural identity. My aim is to be inclusive of the diverse range that constitutes the human experience. Working holistically also means that I draw from a variety of psychological theories and view the therapeutic process from a number of perspectives that span from practical to mystical, including cognitive and psychodynamic frameworks, to healing ancestral trauma. I enjoy supporting you in discovering what you most want for yourself, and exploring what can help you reconnect with who you truly are!

My approach is an intuitive blend that invites holism and studies just outside the realm of psychotherapy, but which may indirectly influence our character and sense of self/identity.
